Spring has finally arrived!

For Benedictine, April used to signify the excitement of seeing old friends and raising funds in support of our mission during Spring Benefit Weekend. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, gathering in person is still not the wisest thing to do, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate Benedictine’s mission and story!

Over the years, we’ve celebrated our mission during Spring Benefit in many different ways. At the heart of this annual gathering are the stories families share about their loved ones in our programs, and the interactions between families, staff, students and the adults we support.

One of the true highlights of the weekend’s festivities is the presentation of the Sister Jeannette Award to a deserving employee who demonstrates Benedictine’s mission and values every day.

Beginning the week of May 3rd, the Board of Directors will reveal this year’s Sister Jeannette Award nominees through daily videos posted to social media. Their stories are wonderful examples of employees keeping Benedictine’s mission alive during the past year of COVID-19.

No matter what their role or title, Benedictine’s employees are the unsung heroes who showed up every day in the midst of so much uncertainty.

Even though we can’t gather for Spring Benefit, your financial support is critical to the success of Benedictine’s mission. Your donation will also help us recognize and thank our employees for their dedication to every student, adult and the entire Benedictine family. For more information or to make a donation, please visit http://weblink.donorperfect.com/springcelebration2…

The Benedictine School was established in 1959 in the rural farming community of Ridgely, Maryland, but the school’s history actually dates back to 1890, when the Sisters of St. Benedict began a school for “young ladies and little girls" known as St. Gertrude Academy. That academy operated continuously for more than sixty years before the order began to shift its focus toward educating and supporting students with developmental disabilities.

In 1955, the Sisters began a pilot program for a group of 12 girls with special needs already enrolled in the Academy. This program’s immediate success inspired them to continue with a full-time commitment to children with developmental disabilities, and on September 14, 1959, the Benedictine School was established as a private special education school with 17 girls and 2 boys.

By 1964, a new school building was erected to meet the needs of the growing population, and our organization has been growing ever since. Since the 1980s, we've continued to expand our residential and vocational services for adults, and we've partnered with local businesses and organizations to ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities find employment. We are proud of Benedictine's rich legacy, which continues to have a positive impact on our local community and economy.

Over the last year, Benedictine staff, students, and residents have continued to band together to overcome the many obstacles presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, often making the impossible possible. Today we’d like to send a shout-out to Yvonne Kitchen, who serves as the Supported Employment Team Lead at Benedictine.

Yvonne is responsible for supervising the staff and enabling all working adults served by Benedictine to get to work. When the pandemic hit, most working adults were not permitted to attend their work placements due to closures and quarantines. Yvonne and her staff had to reinvent how to keep everyone physically active and to maintain workplace skills. Her team created a lot of virtual meetings and inclusions to fill the void and worked with families to ensure that adults were continuing to hone their job skills at home. But as many workers all over the world have discovered, working from home presents unique limitations and challenges.

As life has slowly begun returning to normal, many of Benedictine’s working adults have fortunately been able to return to their work placements, and their employers have been happy to have them return; after all, as Yvonne puts it, “These guys love to go to work. They would rather be there than almost anywhere.”

We’d like to extend a big thank you to Yvonne for helping Benedictine to maintain a strong presence in the wider community, employing local businesses, and having a huge impact on the working adults we serve!

Benedictine is very grateful to The Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council and The Arc Maryland for their recent grant award. The Council and The Arc partnered once again to offer funding support that helps meet the continuing pandemic-related connection needs of Maryland residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With this award, Benedictine is purchasing a variety of IT devices and related components that will directly benefit 67 group home residents and 31 individuals who participate in the Meaningful Day program. These devices
will enable Benedictine to provide virtual educational and informational programming, as well as increased social connections and community experiences, to a greater number of individuals as we continue to safeguard the health of all Meaningful Day participants. Thank you to the Council and The Arc for their continuing support of Maryland residents with IDD!

Over the last year, Benedictine staff, students, and residents have continued to band together to overcome the many obstacles presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, often making the impossible possible. Today we’d like to send a shout-out to Casey Townsend, who led the charge in creating our “Fusion” remote learning program.

Casey serves as a Discovery and Resource Specialist at Benedictine. When Benedictine was forced temporarily to shut down day services in March 2020, there were about 35 people who were left without services. By early May 2020, the program and case coordinators were able to pull together programs and schedules to provide regular services via Zoom, facetime, and the telephone to reconnect with many of those people. With support from other staff, Casey was able to integrate those virtual services with a planned curriculum including daily themed topics that connect to a variety of personal goals. The “Fusion” model has enabled staff to reach out to more people and connect them to their peers who also receive residential services.

We’d like to extend a big thank you to Casey for facilitating the introduction of “Fusion” and enabling our students to access services and connect to their peers. You continue to have a remarkable impact on the lives of Benedictine staff members and the students and families they serve!
