Benedictine School staff arrived back to work following their Easter weekend break to participate in a fully interactive time of professional development. The first seminar on “Sensory Diets” gave staff the opportunity to experience four sensory-motor rotations led by our Occupational and Physical therapy teams (Theresa Rainey, OT; Amanda Lord, Susan Davis, and Dana Swain, COTAs; Haley Miner and Lori Bennett, PTs).
Rotations took around campus including the new Multi-Sensory Environment, the Sensory-Motor POD area, in the library for “Tips and Tools” to integrate sensory-motor strategies in the classroom, and a training on a new sensory assessment tool.
The training ended with a review of Benedictine’s signature STARS Program (Structured Teaching Approach for Readiness Skills) based on the TEACCH program for the education of students with autism. Presenters included Kelly Guttierez and Nick Fox, special educatortion teachers at Benedictine School. Even the “Crocodile Hunter” showed up to review Physical Organization strategies for classrooms! Benedictine staff are simply the best of the best with their creativity and dedication to our students!
