The Benedictine Foundation helps provide philanthropic funds to enable more than 200 children and adults with developmental disabilities and autism achieve their greatest potential and participate as fully as possible in their community through education, work, and home life. There are many ways that caring community members can support us in fulfilling our mission, including contributing to our Annual Fund, honoring a loved one with memorial or tribute gifts, arranging for planned giving, donating through stocks, and inquiring about employer-matched contributions.

Over the last year, Benedictine staff, students, and residents have continued to band together to overcome the many obstacles presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, often making the impossible possible. Today we’d like to send a shout-out to Jamia Cooper-Johns for her outstanding dedication to the Benedictine team.

Jamia is an Employment Specialist and Case Coordinator who works with individuals’ teams to deliver person-centered outcomes. She also works directly with individuals on her caseload to establish goals and to help reach those goals, many of which are employment-focused, though some involve general skills that can be used in daily life. Since most adults have not been able to work during Covid, the Benedictine community has relied on technology to ensure that job-related skills aren’t lost. Jamia says that this has definitely presented a challenge for some of the adults Benedictine serves, but the upside is that the technology has allowed staff and adults to feel connected and to maintain a sense of community. She adds that it is extremely refreshing to be able to see the smiling faces of people she has not been able to see for months.

Thank you, Jamia, for everything you do for the people on your caseload and for the Benedictine community! You make a difference every day!

Meet Brandy Bedo! Brandy fulfills a dual role as an Employment Specialist and Case Coordinator here at Benedictine. That means that she helps individuals develop meaningful goals each year, and then she provides support to people on her caseload so that they may reach those goals.

Brandy was one of the key staff members responsible for facilitating the shift from in-person learning and vocational training to a virtual environment when the Covid-19 pandemic first hit last spring. Her biggest challenge was learning how to reconfigure real-world, work-related goals for an online format; after all, “When people can’t work in the community, how can we make progress on community-based goals?” Brandy says it took a lot of innovative thinking and heavy reliance on Zoom as a communication tool, but before long, “we started to see that people were not only continuing to make progress remotely, many were thriving.” Online tools such as an interactive game that teaches grocery-bagging skills provided some meaningful facetime on Zoom and helped to build real-world proficiency that can be taken back into the community when Covid-19 restrictions finally ease.

The Benedictine community is very thankful to Brandy and other dedicated staff members like her for enabling us to continue fulfilling our mission, even under the most difficult of circumstances. Thank you, Brandy, for your devotion and innovation, and for everything you bring to our team! You make a difference in people’s lives every day!
