Our Benedictine website at will be down starting today, Monday, November 16th, to make way for our new and improved website! You will still be able to visit benschool.org, but it will look a little different for the next week or so. There will still be links to the Employee Portal, Billing, the school schedule, ‘Apply Now’ and COVID updates.

Rooted in History… Benedictine’s tree-lined mile lane and campus have welcomed Sisters, students, and guests since 1887 when Sister M. Dolorosa founded St. Gertrude’s Priory by purchasing the 750-acre estate, The Plains, one of the oldest colonial estates in Maryland. For over 100 years, Sisters Baptista, Evangelista, and Marcella planted and cared for hundreds of trees on the property during their lifetime, and staff continue that tradition today.
The Benedictine Sisters began St. Gertrude’s Academy in 1890 educating young ladies, until 1959 when they established the Benedictine School to serve children and adults with special needs.

Benedictine is home to eight champion trees designated by the Maryland Big Tree Program. From one of those, a Magnolia, seed propagation began in 2018. The adults and students with special needs who work in the Benedictine Garden Center collected pods from the existing tree, harvested the seeds, planted in pots, and cared for them daily. You can help to continue our legacy by purchasing a Benedictine Magnolia.

Dignity of Work is first taught in our school vocational program, helping to prepare those we serve with the skills necessary to be successfully employed in the community. By performing a variety of tasks in the Garden Center, Laundry, Car Wash and with the Busy Bee cleaning crew, students are not only taught how to perform each job, but also the social skills needed to interact appropriately in a community setting. Vocational training is one small aspect of Benedictine’s commitment to helping children and adults with developmental disabilities achieve their greatest potential. ... See MoreSee Less

He is currently performing landscaping tasks including trimming trees and branches, planting flowers, edging sprinkler heads and best of all, preparing the bunkers each morning for the golfers using a gas operated, riding bunker machine. Joey has learned his tasks quickly and his supervisor, Head Golf Course Superintendent, Owen, has described his work as “Awesome’. Congrats, Joey, on a job well done! ... See MoreSee Less

A person’s dignity and honor are not derived from accomplishments or achievements, but rather by the transformation that occurs by doing a job well and with great care. Todd is a great example of this statement. Todd has worked at McDonald’s in Denton for the past 9 years. Like many people, when COVID hit, he was not able to go to work for several months. When Todd was able to return to McDonald’s, he had to get up to speed quickly on new disinfecting techniques and policies. His coworkers were happy to see him back because they missed his work ethic and witty personality. Todd, congratulations on 9 years and thanks to McDonald’s for being a great community partner! ...
