Rooted in History… Benedictine’s tree-lined mile lane and campus have welcomed Sisters, students, and guests since 1887 when Sister M. Dolorosa founded St. Gertrude’s Priory by purchasing the 750-acre estate, The Plains, one of the oldest colonial estates in Maryland. For over 100 years, Sisters Baptista, Evangelista, and Marcella planted and cared for hundreds of trees on the property during their lifetime, and staff continue that tradition today.
The Benedictine Sisters began St. Gertrude’s Academy in 1890 educating young ladies, until 1959 when they established the Benedictine School to serve children and adults with special needs.

Benedictine is home to eight champion trees designated by the Maryland Big Tree Program. From one of those, a Magnolia, seed propagation began in 2018. The adults and students with special needs who work in the Benedictine Garden Center collected pods from the existing tree, harvested the seeds, planted in pots, and cared for them daily. You can help to continue our legacy by purchasing a Benedictine Magnolia.

Dignity of Work is first taught in our school vocational program, helping to prepare those we serve with the skills necessary to be successfully employed in the community. By performing a variety of tasks in the Garden Center, Laundry, Car Wash and with the Busy Bee cleaning crew, students are not only taught how to perform each job, but also the social skills needed to interact appropriately in a community setting. Vocational training is one small aspect of Benedictine’s commitment to helping children and adults with developmental disabilities achieve their greatest potential. ... See MoreSee Less

He is currently performing landscaping tasks including trimming trees and branches, planting flowers, edging sprinkler heads and best of all, preparing the bunkers each morning for the golfers using a gas operated, riding bunker machine. Joey has learned his tasks quickly and his supervisor, Head Golf Course Superintendent, Owen, has described his work as “Awesome’. Congrats, Joey, on a job well done! ... See MoreSee Less
